Easy to use and to empty, this model has a 45-minute battery life but comes with a spare to double its runtime. At 3.1kg it is a bit heavier than some, but it has powerful suction and the option of an extra powerful turbo mode.

A significant outlay at over £600, this excellent Dyson is light (at 2.7kg), but still has powerful suction. It has a laser in the head to illuminate dust, a 60-minute battery life, and a range of attachments.
6. Hoover H-Free 300 HF322HM
The H-Free has a lithium-ion battery that lasts for 40 minutes and can be converted into a handheld for spot cleaning. At just 2.5kg, it’s lightweight and compact, with simple controls.
