January transfer window: what date does it close?

The end of the January transfer window is in sight and clubs across the UK and Europe will be looking to do some last-minute shopping.
Agents’ phones will be ringing off the hook as clubs aim to strengthen their squads and a number of players could make a move before the transfer window closes.
Many Premier League and European stars are also out of contract, including Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Liverpool’s Emre Can. So expect some movement or pre-contract deals signed soon.

We take a look at when the January transfer window closes, the players who could potentially move clubs and those out of contract at the end of the 2017-2018 season.
When does the January transfer window close?
The 2018 January transfer window closes at 11pm on Wednesday, 31 January 2018. The English and Scottish leagues have the same deadline as La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and the Bundesliga. Portugal’s transfer window closes on 2 January.
Which players are out of contract at the end of the season?
There are a host of big names in the Premier League and in Europe whose contracts will expire at the end of the campaign. When the transfer window opens in January they will be free to negotiate a move at the end of the season for no fee involved.
We pick out some of the top players who are out of contract.

How much money was spent in the 2017 summer transfer window?
According to sports business experts Deloitte, Premier League clubs spent £1.4billion during the 2017 summer transfer window. That included £210million spent on transfer deadline day. The £1.4bn total was a 23% increase on the previous year, the Guardian reported at the time.
