David Moyes takes over as Man United boss on six-year deal
Ferguson's successor named after club makes Facebook blunder and Everton confirm exit
MANCHESTER UNITED made a mess of unveiling David Moyes as their new manager today when a banner proclaiming his arrival at Old Trafford appeared on the club's Facebook page long before any official announcement, and it fell to his Moyes's current employers, Everton, to reveal that he was taking over from Alex Ferguson. However, Moyes was eventually confirmed as the new United boss shortly before 4pm. "I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever," said the 50-year-old Scot. "But the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often." United also made it clear that Alex Ferguson had a major say in appointing his successor. The outgoing Man United manager described his successor as "a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic." Ferguson added: "There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club." The news was widely anticipated and had been leaked before the official statement from Old Trafford. The Facebook blunder came shortly before Everton confirmed that Moyes would be leaving the club after 11 years at Goodison Park, and would be heading to Manchester. In a statement on the club website, Everton announced: "David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season. The manager met chairman Bill Kenwright early yesterday evening and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United." Earlier, the message inviting fans to send a "personal welcome to our new manager David Moyes" appeared briefly on the official United Facebook page. Moyes has signed a six-year deal at Old Trafford and his "move across the North West will see the dawning of a new era at the 20-time champions of England," according to the Daily Mail. The official statement from United also included a comment from the Old Trafford legend Bobby Charlton, who said: "In David Moyes we have someone who understands the things that make this such a special club. We have secured a man who is committed to the long-term and will build teams for the future as well as now. Stability breeds success."
