When Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors point guard, made a basket during the warm-up of an NBA match he could not have known that the trick shot would spark an internet meme.

Now fans are attempting to copy the shot - but not always on the basketball court. Some examples have been in grocery stores, others have happened while taking out the rubbish. And all have been caught on camera to be posted on social media.

One fan, Samuel Grubbs, posted his #CurryChallenge video on Twitter. With more than 13,000 retweets and 24,000 likes, it’s the most popular attempt so far.

ESPN reports that although it’s very funny, Grubbs’s attempt could be seen as a “bit controversial” as he’s doing it in public places with unsuspecting members of the public nearby. In his last attempt he even jumps on a car.

After watching the Twitter video, Curry admits that Grubbs’s trick shots are “creative”, but he wants people to be respectful around others.

“I will just say be very mindful of the repercussions of messing with people’s stuff,” he told ESPN. “I do not condone violence. That is the only thing. I do not condone violence.

“It’s very creative [Grubbs’s video]. People are obviously having fun, but please be respectful of other people’s property. I don’t want anything to happen to anyone.”

We round up the most popular #CurryChallenge trick shot attempts and some of the reactions to the meme:
