OnePlus 6 launches 16 May: here’s what we know so far

The new OnePlus 6 smartphone will be unveiled at a special launch event in London next month, the company has announced.

The Chinese gadget maker is offering more than 1,000 fans the opportunity to attend the showcase, on 16 May, The Verge reports. Tickets are available to buy online now for £16, with the price set to rise to £30 after 8pm on Friday.

Although OnePlus has kept quiet about the specs of its new flagship device, Engadget says that some details have been leaked.

Much like the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9, the OnePlus 6 will reportedly feature an edge-to-edge design, with a 6.3in display offering a 2,280x1,080 screen resolution, the tech site says.

The phone is also likely to come with a Snapdragon 845 processor and around 8GB of RAM, the Daily Express reports, as well as up to 256GB worth of storage.

Details of the device’s camera are scarce, but the newspaper says specs leaked on Chinese blogging platform Weibo suggest that the OnePlus 6’s rear-facing shoot will sport a 16-megapixel sensor.

OnePlus company co-founder Carl Pei told Forbes that the firm is focused on delivering the “best possible smartphone”, rather than chasing outright sales.

“If we succeed with that, everything else will follow,” he said.

Asked whether OnePlus would follow rival Apple and swap the handset’s headphone socket for a Bluetooth connection, Pei said: “The more important question we ask is, ‘How important is the headphone jack to our users?’

“Every year I do a Twitter poll and the number of people taking part increases each time. This year there were over 19,000 votes, and 88% said they like physical headphone jacks [ports].”

Fans will have to wait until 16 May for the official specs and details on the new OnePlus 6.
