Ted Cruz wanted to visit a Bronx high school. He got turned down after students threatened to walk out.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was forced to skip a scheduled campaign stop at Bronx Lighthouse College Prepatory Academy Wednesday morning after students told their principal they would walk out of school before they would listen to the GOP presidential candidate talk. In a letter submitted to school Principal Alix Duggins, students threatened to walk out when the candidate, whom the students called "misogynistic, homophobic, and racist," arrived.
"The presence of Ted Cruz and the ideas he stands for are offensive," the letter reads. "His views are against ours and are actively working to harm us, our community, and the people we love."
The CEO of Lighthouse Academies agreed to cancel Cruz's visit after receiving the letter, which earned praise from Duggins for its "elegantly argued points" and for the students' clear "commitment" to their "beliefs and values." "Most of us are immigrants or come from immigrant backgrounds," student Destiny Domeneck, 16, said. "Ted Cruz goes against everything our school stands for."
