British tennis star Andy Murray defeated Spain's Marcel Granollers on Thursday to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open. Murray, the No. 2 men's seed in in the tournament, won in straight sets (6-4, 6-1, 6-4) and will face either Kei Nishikori or Karen Kahachanov in a third-round match. Nishikori vs. Khachanov has been suspended due to rain, as all play not scheduled for the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium — which has a retractable roof — has been suspended due to inclement weather.
On the women's side, No. 6-seeded Venus Williams will take the Arthur Ashe court against Germany's Julia Goerges. It's Williams' 18th U.S. Open, though the elder Williams sister struggled through her opening match against Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova. Younger sister Serena, the women's top seed, will look to follow a strong opening performance when she faces fellow American Vania King on the Arthur Ashe court at 7 p.m. ET.
