In a game of seesawing fortunes, a number of records were broken, including both teams combining for 1,151 offensive yards, which the BBC reports is “a record not just for a Super Bowl but for any regular- or post-season game in NFL history”.
Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles, who was named most valuable player, became the first player in Super Bowl history to throw a pass for a touchdown and receive a pass for a touchdown, following a trick play that gave the Eagles the lead going into the second half.
New England’s chances of catching the Eagles were dealt a match-ending blow with just over two minutes left to play when star Patriots quarterback Tom Brady fumbled the ball after being tackled by Brandon Graham, giving possession to Philadelphia.
