The Simpsons creator Matt Groening is working on an animated comedy-fantasy series for adults expected to air on Netflix in 2018.

Disenchantment is about "how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you", he says.

It is set in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland and deals with "life and death, love and sex", he adds.

According to Dan Carrier in The Guardian, after branching out from the Simpsons to poke fun at modern life via the sci-fi hit Futurama - "set in a high tech world but featuring a human race whose personal development has not kept up" - the animator now appears to be "[turning] his wit to a Game of Thrones-style fantasy".

Cindy Holland, Netflix's vice president of original content, told Variety the show features Groening's signature "animation style and biting wit".

It centres around hard-drinking princess Bean (Broad City's Abbi Jacobson), her elf friend Elfo (Nat Faxon) and "personal demon" Luci (Eric Andre), who encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses and plenty of human fools as well, Rolling Stone, reports.

Disenchantment will also feature various voice-over veterans from The Simpsons and Groening's sci-fi cartoon Futurama, including John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille and David Herman.

Nellie Andreeva in Deadline Hollywood says the series has been in the works for more than 18 months.

She adds that Netflix has been gradually expanding its animated series portfolio to include BoJack Horseman, F Is For Family and the upcoming Dr Seuss’ Green Eggs And Ham.

Disenchantment has been confirmed for two ten-episode seasons so far, with the first arriving on Netflix next year.
