Fly drive: Aston Martin V12 Vantage Spitfire 80
The luxury British car manufacturer takes a flight of fancy to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the famous plane's maiden flight

For those obsessed with aviation but without a pilot's licence, this new limited-edition release from Aston Martin might just be the next best thing.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Supermarine Spitfire's first flight, Aston Martin Cambridge has commissioned eight special versions of its V12 Vantage S that have been tailored using Q, the car manufacturer's personalisation service.
Decked out in Duxford green, the colour named after the RAF base where the first Spitfire squadron was stationed, the sports car also features a pinstripe in the plane's trademark yellow on the side strakes, which can be customised further with the optional addition of a Spitfire serial number.
The theme continues inside, with clever details including floor mats with sheepskin inserts inspired by the classic Irvin flying jacket, while the door handles are finished in a red webbing that matches the interior of the famous aircraft. Taking the connection a step further, certain components of the car are being made by the Aircraft Restoration Company, based at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, which also owns and operates a working airfield.
The end result is a worthy tribute to two titans of British engineering, each of which has made its own distinct mark in history.
The V12 Vantage S Spitfire 80 is priced at £180,000 and is available exclusively from Aston Martin Cambridge; www.jardinemotors.co.uk/aston-martin/new-cars/vantage-spitfire-80/
