Marco Cerrato: wearing the trousers

The Neapolitan tailor on taking over the family business, traditional design and 75-year-old cutting methods

Cerrato was founded by our father, Ciro Cerrato, in 1972, and has been run by myself and my brother, Massimo, for the past four years. We used to help our father make trousers, so we grew up in tailoring and are now continuing our family business.

All our trousers are handmade by a team of 18 craftspeople in Napoli, who have each trained for a minimum of three to four years to master their craft. We offer a fully bespoke service, so customers can choose every detail of their trousers, from the cut and the fabric right down to small details such as the type of buttons, the size of the belt loops and the position of the pockets, if pockets are required.

The design of our trousers is very traditional, and we still use the same cutting methods that were used 75 years ago, but we work with the client to add modern touches. We have hundreds of fabrics to choose from, and we can work with a variety of materials such as denim, for a more contemporary tailored look.

While our atelier is in Napoli, we also hold appointments and fittings in central London. The bespoke process takes approximately two months from when initial measurements are taken to when the trousers are complete, with one fitting in between to ensure the trousers fit the customer perfectly.
