Andy Robertson: Liverpool can win the Premier League title

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson believes the current Premier League leaders can hold off the challenge of defending champions Manchester City and win this season’s title.

After 17 games Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten side are a point ahead of City at the top of the Premier League table and go into the busy festive period full of confidence after beating Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool travel to Wolves on Friday night before facing Newcastle and Arsenal in successive home games at Anfield. The new year then kicks off with a huge clash against Man City at the Etihad on 3 January 2019.

When asked if he believed Liverpool can remain top of the league Scotland captain Robertson told The Guardian: “Of course we do. We are in December, we know how tough this period is, but we are top of the league. We have just got to keep this period going.

“We know how good Manchester City are, we have a bit of a gap that has opened up now [to third], the two of us are close to each other, but we believe we can stay top. There is a long way to go and we still have to play big games, starting on Friday night [at Wolves].”

• Friday 21 December: Wolves vs. Liverpool (8pm)
• Wednesday 26 December: Liverpool vs. Newcastle United (3pm)
• Saturday 29 December: Liverpool vs. Arsenal (5.30pm)
• Thursday 3 January: Manchester City vs. Liverpool (8pm)

Robertson backs Alisson

Liverpool beat Man Utd 3-1 at Anfield last weekend but the visitors’ goal came when Reds keeper Alisson fumbled Romelu Lukaku’s cross and Jesse Lingard pounced to equalise.

Sky Sports reports that despite the Brazilian’s error Robertson was full of praise for Liverpool stopper Alisson.

The left-back said: “He has been unbelievable this season and we all make mistakes. If Mo Salah or [Roberto] Firmino make a mistake it maybe doesn’t get punished because it is up the other end but that is unfortunately what a keeper has to put up with, if they make a mistake it usually turns into a goal.

“Of course, he will be disappointed with it but he bounced back and we can’t moan about it. He has dug us out Tuesday night [against Napoli] and we are still in the Champions League because of him.”

Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Napoli last week secured their place in the Champions League round of 16 where they have been drawn against German giants Bayern Munich.
