Mean Girls, SpongeBob SquarePants musicals lead 2018 Tony nominations

Children of the 1990s, rejoice: Mean Girls, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Harry Potter all made strong appearances Tuesday morning during the announcement of the 2018 Tony Award nominations. The Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants musicals lead the pack with 12 honors each, followed by revivals of Angels in America and Carousel, which each got 11 nods. The Band's Visit, a new musical, also got 11 nominations, while Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and a revival of My Fair Lady earned 10.
Just 30 Broadway productions were eligible for the Tony Awards this year, the smallest pool in more than a decade, The New York Times reports. Actresses Tina Fey and Amy Schumer additionally received nominations, as well as actors Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield, and Michael Cera. The winners will be announced on June 10 on CBS.
