British sport’s super Saturday: Kyle Edmund, England and Lewis Hamilton all in action

Brits are preparing for a huge weekend of sport with Wimbledon, the Fifa World Cup and the Formula 1 British Grand Prix all on the schedule.

Tomorrow is being billed as “blockbuster Saturday”, says Sky Sports, then on Sunday there is Twenty20 cricket and the F1 race taking place.

With temperatures set to remain high it could (results permitting) be a memorable weekend for UK sports fans. Here we take a look at what’s on...

Edmund vs. Djokovic

British No.1 Kyle Edmund is through to the third round at Wimbledon where he will face three-time champion Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

The 23-year-old is the only British player left in the singles tournaments at the All England Club and it’s the first time he has made the last 32.

Edmund is coached by Sweden’s Fredrik Rosengren and he hopes it will be a double celebration for him when England face their European rivals in the World Cup quarter-final in Russia. “Hopefully it will be a success for both of us – England and myself,” Edmund told the BBC.

The start time and court of Edmund’s clash against Djokovic is yet to be confirmed.

Can the Three Lions roar in Samara?

It’s estimated that up to 30 million people could be watching England’s World Cup game with Sweden tomorrow. The quarter-final clash in Samara starts at 3pm (UK time) and is live on the BBC. Gareth Southgate’s side will be looking to secure a place in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990.

Lewis is the favourite for Silverstone

British driver Lewis Hamilton is going for his sixth career victory at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix this weekend. Tomorrow the F1 world champion will compete in qualifying at Silverstone, which starts at 2pm.

Sunday’s sporting action

The F1 British Grand Prix is at 2.10pm on Sunday but it’s not the only major event. England’s cricketers are also in action in a Twenty20 match against India in Bristol (2pm start). Sky Sports will show live coverage of the British GP and England vs. India T20 clash.

Don’t forget the sunscreen…

It’s going to be a sizzler on Saturday with BBC Weather forecasting a high of 31C at Wimbledon. It will also be hot on the track at Silverstone for British GP qualifying. The BBC forecasts a high of 27C. Sunday’s race at Silverstone could see a high of 29C.
