France are through to the last-16 of the Fifa Women’s World Cup after a controversial 1-0 victory over Nigeria. The host nation were awarded a penalty with just over ten minutes to go after the video assistant referee (VAR) adjudged that Viviane Asseyi was fouled inside the area. Wendie Renard stepped up to take the spot-kick but her effort hit the post and went wide. However, VAR ruled that Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie moved off her line too early and a second penalty was awarded. Renard made no mistake and the victory secured top spot for France in group A.

With Jason Roy ruled out of England’s next two Cricket World Cup matches, thoughts have turned to possible replacements if his hamstring injury fails to recover. Among the names on the list is that of Alex Hales, who was a cornerstone of the team until earlier this season when he was thrown out of the squad after a second failed drugs test. England captain Eoin Morgan said: “We would have to assess how that would sit in the changing room and the stigma it would bring with Alex coming back in.” But according to The Sun the door remains firmly closed.

Ferrari will continue to challenge Sebastian Vettel’s time penalty which saw him miss out on victory in the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix on 9 June. Lewis Hamilton took the chequered flag after a stewards’ enquiry, but Ferrari have asked for the decision to be reviewed. Formula1.com reports: “Ferrari informed the FIA of their intention to appeal, but decided against pursuing it. However, via the FIA’s International Sporting Code, a 76-page document that relates to all FIA-sanctioned championships, the Prancing Horse still had another avenue open to them. Competitors can trigger Article 14, titled Right of Review, if ‘a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time’.”
