The Decathlon: Kyrgios’s bromance with Murray continues and Platini is detained
Ten things from the world of sport on Tuesday 18 June
1. Kyrgios: I would pay to watch Murray
Just like the rest of the tennis world, Nick Kyrgios can’t wait to see Andy Murray make his return to the court this week.
After hip surgery earlier this year Murray will play doubles at the Fever-Tree Championships at the Queen’s Club when he partners Spaniard Feliciano López.
Murray and López play Colombian top seeds Robert Farah and Juan Sebastián Cabal tomorrow.

Kyrgios, who is in action at Queen’s today against Adrian Mannarino, told The Daily Telegraph: “Just to see him back healthy and happy on court is all that matters. He is a warrior.
“He’s good enough to do damage in doubles, especially with Feliciano. I’d almost pay to watch that match.
“He’s a legend. But I don’t want to keep answering questions, because it’ll seem like I love the guy or something.”
2. Platini detained over Qatar World Cup
Former Uefa president Michel Platini has been detained in connection with alleged corruption relating to Fifa’s decision to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, The Guardian reports. The French football legend was taken into custody in Paris this morning, Sky Sports says, and detained at the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police. Platini, 63, was banned in 2015 for ethics breaches.
3. Four injured in Toronto shooting
The Toronto Raptors’s NBA championship victory parade was marred by a daytime shooting which saw four people injured in the Canadian city. Two people were seriously wounded, but police confirmed that none of the victims had life-threatening injuries. The Raptors secured their first ever NBA title after beating defending champions Golden State Warriors 4-2 in the best-of-seven series.
4. And they’re off at Royal Ascot...
More than 300,000 horse racing fans will be at Royal Ascot this week, which starts today and continues until Saturday. The BBC reports that 30 races will be staged and £7.3m prize money is on offer at one of British sport’s “best known and most colourful events”.
5. France top group as Nigeria pay VAR penalty
France are through to the last-16 of the Fifa Women’s World Cup after a controversial 1-0 victory over Nigeria. The host nation were awarded a penalty with just over ten minutes to go after the video assistant referee (VAR) adjudged that Viviane Asseyi was fouled inside the area. Wendie Renard stepped up to take the spot-kick but her effort hit the post and went wide. However, VAR ruled that Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie moved off her line too early and a second penalty was awarded. Renard made no mistake and the victory secured top spot for France in group A.

6. No way back for Hales with England
With Jason Roy ruled out of England’s next two Cricket World Cup matches, thoughts have turned to possible replacements if his hamstring injury fails to recover. Among the names on the list is that of Alex Hales, who was a cornerstone of the team until earlier this season when he was thrown out of the squad after a second failed drugs test. England captain Eoin Morgan said: “We would have to assess how that would sit in the changing room and the stigma it would bring with Alex coming back in.” But according to The Sun the door remains firmly closed.

7. Ferrari ask FIA to review Vettel penalty
Ferrari will continue to challenge Sebastian Vettel’s time penalty which saw him miss out on victory in the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix on 9 June. Lewis Hamilton took the chequered flag after a stewards’ enquiry, but Ferrari have asked for the decision to be reviewed. Formula1.com reports: “Ferrari informed the FIA of their intention to appeal, but decided against pursuing it. However, via the FIA’s International Sporting Code, a 76-page document that relates to all FIA-sanctioned championships, the Prancing Horse still had another avenue open to them. Competitors can trigger Article 14, titled Right of Review, if ‘a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time’.”
8. United fans top table for racism arrests
Fans of Manchester United topped the table for football-related arrests that involved racism between 2014 and 2018, new figures show. Data released after a freedom of information request shows that 27 people recorded as fans of the Old Trafford club were arrested during the football seasons in that period. Leeds United and Millwall came second, with 15 arrests each.
9. Mbappe ‘200% staying’, says PSG chief
Any faint hopes that Liverpool had of landing Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe this summer appear to have been wiped out. The French champions have indicated that they would be willing to sell Neymar, but not their other attacking spearhead. Ruling out a move for the 20-year-old, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi told France Football: “Mbappe will 200% be at PSG next season.”

10. New deals for Pogba and Rashford?
The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United will offer unsettled star Paul Pogba £500,000-a-week to stay at Old Trafford.
French midfielder Pogba admitted this week that it “may be time for a new challenge” and the Mail says that “frantic” United bosses are preparing a mega-money contract.
Pogba has been linked with Real Madrid and Juventus, but according to the Independent Paris Saint-Germain are willing to give the World Cup winner a way out of Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, The Times says that United are set to be given a huge boost with the news that England striker Marcus Rashford is ready to sign a long-term deal with his boyhood club.
