Sport shorts: Dettori strikes gold at Royal Ascot, Torres retires, Cech returns to Chelsea
Ten things from the world of sport on Friday 21 June

1. Frankie’s on another level
Italian jockey Frankie Dettori won the first four races on Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot yesterday - a result that “almost brought Britain’s betting industry to its knees for a second time”, The Guardian reports.
Included in Dettori’s four victories was Gold Cup success on Stradivarius, the seventh time he has won the race.
John Gosden, the trainer of Stradivarius, said: “He is a phenomenon. Frankie is like a player who gets to the final of Wimbledon and then raises it to another level. For a kid of 48 he is remarkable. And when he rides here he goes to another level.”

Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has announced that he will retire from football. Currently playing in Japan for Sagan Tosu, the 35-year-old won the 2010 Fifa World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships with Spain. During his club career he won the Champions League with Chelsea and Europa League with Atletico Madrid.

4. Rory hopes for special Open win
Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is aiming to secure the “most special win” of his career when The Open is held on home soil at Royal Portrush next month. The four-time major winner told the Belfast Telegraph: “There’s nothing that I’d like more than to lift that Claret Jug in front of all my friends and family. Would it be my most special win? One hundred per cent. I haven’t tried to hide that fact. I didn’t know if I’d ever have an opportunity to do that. It’s going to be a massive week for golf, for the country, for me personally, and I have to go out there with a good mindset and not let the occasion get the better of me.”
5. England to face Cameroon in last 16
Ajara Nchout scored twice, including an injury-time winner, as Cameroon beat New Zealand 2-1 to finish third in group E at the Fifa Women’s World Cup. The Indomitable Lionesses will now face England’s Lionesses on Sunday at the Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes (4.30pm).
