England star Karen Carney has announced that she will retire from football after tomorrow’s Fifa Women’s World Cup third/fourth-placed match against Sweden.
“To have played for England was my ultimate ambition and to do so at four World Cups and represent Team GB at a home Olympics was beyond the wildest dreams I had when first starting out.”
England face Sweden in the bronze medal match tomorrow in Nice (4pm, live on BBC One).
2. Dutch eye a perfect ten
Sunday’s Fifa Women’s World Cup final sees the holders take on the reigning European champions. Three-time winners United States will be favourites to defend their title, but come up against a Netherlands side that is currently on a run of nine successive victories. Can the Dutch make it a perfect ten? The final on Sunday will be held at the Stade de Lyon (4pm, live on BBC One).
American 15-year-old Cori “Coco” Gauff will play on Centre Court today against Polona Hercog in the women’s singles third round at Wimbledon. Andy Murray is also back on court today in the mixed doubles alongside Serena Williams. The “dream team” take on Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi. The BBC reports that no court has yet been assigned and the match won’t start before 5.30pm.
Australia have suffered a Cricket World Cup injury blow following a “horror net session” yesterday. The Guardian reports that Shaun Marsh has been ruled out of the tournament after breaking his wrist while Glenn Maxwell will be monitored ahead of tomorrow’s clash against South Africa.
5. Jones hails prop Marler
Harlequins prop Joe Marler has come out of international retirement to be named in England’s training squad for the Rugby World Cup.
Describing the 29-year-old as “one of the world’s best”, England head coach Eddie Jones said: “I saw Joe during the Barbarians week and he indicated that he had a desire to come back. We have since had a couple of chats and we have given him the opportunity to do that. Now it is up to him to show us what he has got.”

6. John McCririck dies aged 79
Legendary racing pundit John McCririck has died at a London hospital aged 79, his family has announced. A statement said: “His flamboyant broadcasting style from the heart of betting ring proved extremely popular with racing fans and beyond. Despite suffering ill health in recent months, John continued to make several TV and radio appearances.” He is survived by Jenny, his wife of 48 years.
7. Governing bodies to take part in Pride
Sky Sports reports that the English Football Association (FA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will take part in the Pride London parade tomorrow. It’s the first time that the FA has been involved in the event while the ECB featured last year.
8. Arsenal in race for Marcelo
According to reports in Spain Brazilian defender Marcelo has asked to leave Real Madrid. The 31-year-old has spent 13 seasons at the Bernabeu and believes that it’s time for a new challenge. Arsenal are among the clubs interested in the left-footer. The Gunners are joined in the race by Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan.
Charles Leclerc does not think that his Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel will retire from Formula 1. The 21-year-old has dismissed the notion that Vettel could quit at the end of 2019 and expects the German to be on the grid next season. “I do not see him retiring,” said Leclerc. “I cannot speak for him, but he looks more motivated than ever, he works very hard to do the best for the team and himself.”
Frank Lampard may have legendary status from his days as a Chelsea player but the new Blues boss expects no favours after returning to Stamford Bridge.
