Technology reunited a bereaved mother with an avatar of her dead daughter in virtual reality this week in a documentary watched by millions in South Korea. Is technology making us grieve differently? And does it aid or inhibit mourning?
Refugees
This week the UN called for Greece to address dire conditions inside the Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, where 20,000 refugees are living in makeshift shelters without access to health care. The camp is far over capacity, and many refugees are sick and malnourished. A doctor has warned the squalid conditions could lead to a deadly pandemic. How worried should we be? And what can be done to improve these asylum-seekers' access to basic human necessities while the Greek government and the EU more broadly find a solution to the massive application backlog?
The green bubble
Oil giant BP is the latest company to promise to cut its carbon emissions to zero. Is this yet more "greenwash"? Or is it a sign that times are changing – and that pressure from investors for action on climate change could in fact be creating a bubble in "green" companies?
