Novak Djokovic secured his third US Open title after beating Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets in New York.

Like Del Potro, Djokovic has battled against injuries and he said: “I would like to congratulate Juan Martin.

“What he has done in the last four or five years with his wrist injuries, coming back and to have faith and belief that one day he will be a top player again. I wish him all the best. I know he will be back here with the Champions trophy.

“When I had my surgery I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through. It was a difficult time but you learn from adversity and learn when are down, when things are not working out and I tried to take the best out of myself and thrive on these moments.

“I was hoping he [Pete Sampras] would be here tonight but he’s not. I want to say Pete I love you. He’s my idol.”

Although he lost in straight sets, 2009 champion Del Potro fought to the end and was distraught after the defeat. “Delpo” was supported at Arthur Ashe Stadium by an army of Argentine fans who sang his name and cheered throughout.

Praising his supporters and his opponent, Del Potro said: “It is not easy to speak right now but I love you guys.

“I am so happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol. He knows that he is one of my friends and is one player I want to watch win titles. I am sad to lose but I am happy for Novak.

“I never game up during my wrist problems. I was trying to fix all my injuries to be here once again. I got it after nine years which is amazing to me because the US open is my favourite tournament. For that I am very proud.”
