US Open: Djokovic delight after straight sets victory against Del Potro - reactions
Serbian star wins his third US Open title at Flushing Meadows
Novak Djokovic secured his third US Open title after beating Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets in New York.
Djokovic, who won Wimbledon this season, beat Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. The Serbian also won the US Open in 2011 and 2015 and his victory in 2018 moves him to joint-third alongside Pete Sampras on the all-time list of grand slams with 14.

“What he has done in the last four or five years with his wrist injuries, coming back and to have faith and belief that one day he will be a top player again. I wish him all the best. I know he will be back here with the Champions trophy.
“When I had my surgery I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through. It was a difficult time but you learn from adversity and learn when are down, when things are not working out and I tried to take the best out of myself and thrive on these moments.
“I was hoping he [Pete Sampras] would be here tonight but he’s not. I want to say Pete I love you. He’s my idol.”
Although he lost in straight sets, 2009 champion Del Potro fought to the end and was distraught after the defeat. “Delpo” was supported at Arthur Ashe Stadium by an army of Argentine fans who sang his name and cheered throughout.
Praising his supporters and his opponent, Del Potro said: “It is not easy to speak right now but I love you guys.
“I am so happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol. He knows that he is one of my friends and is one player I want to watch win titles. I am sad to lose but I am happy for Novak.
“I never game up during my wrist problems. I was trying to fix all my injuries to be here once again. I got it after nine years which is amazing to me because the US open is my favourite tournament. For that I am very proud.”
