A new Queen of the Jungle was crowned last night: former EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa.

The soap actor beat radio host Roman Kemp and Coronation Street’s Andy Whyment to the coveted title after the three took part in the final Bushtucker Trials of I’m a Celebrity… Get me out of Here! 2019.

After the three challenges - involving dozens of snakes, disgusting dishes and crawling critters - the trio were treated to a final feast before the winner was announced by co-presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

As her victory became clear, Jossa, who played Lauren Branning in EastEnders from 2010 to 2018, said: “I have no words.”

She joins a long line-up of past queens and kings of the jungle - do you remember them all?

Tony Blackburn (2002)

Veteran DJ Tony Blackburn won over his fellow campmates and the nation with his eccentric humour, narrowly edging out bookies’ favourite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson to become the very first King of the Jungle in 2002. Blackburn ascribed his victory to his ability to rise above the other contestants’ squabbling.

Phil Tufnell (2003)

Laid-back former England spin bowler Phil Tufnell cat-napped and wise-cracked his way to the title in 2003. Tufnell’s triumph in the jungle also provided a springboard for a successful transition from professional sportsman to TV personality – he was a contestant on series seven of Strictly Come Dancing in 2009, and has been a team captain on A Question of Sport since 2008.

Kerry Katona (2004)

Fourteen million viewers tuned in to see former Atomic Kitten member Kerry Katona crowned I’m A Celebrity’s first Queen of the Jungle in 2004. However, the big story of the series was the addictively cringe-worthy flirtation between fellow contestants Peter Andre and Katie Price, who got married a year later (and divorced in 2009).

Joe Pasquale (2004)

Squeaky-voiced comedian Pasquale won the fourth series of I’m A Celebrity, with his combination of humour and warmth proving a winning formula. However, it was Paul Burrell who provided the series with its most memorable moment, becoming a blubbering wreck during a Bushtucker trial which required him to put his hand in a hole filled with creepy crawlies.

Carol Thatcher (2005)

Journalist Carol Thatcher beat out favourite Sid Owen to be crowned Queen of the Jungle. Thatcher admitted that her mother, ex-PM Margaret Thatcher, didn’t tune in - missing the chance to see her daughter scoff down kangaroo testicles in a Bushtucker trial.

Matt Willis (2006)

The likeable Busted frontman didn’t have to go far to capitalise on his title as King of the Jungle in 2006 – he and wife Emma co-hosted the show’s ITV2 spin-off programme in 2007 and 2008. Busted released their fourth album Half Way There earlier this year.

Christopher Biggins (2007)

Panto luvvie Christopher Biggins came into the jungle five days later than the other contestants in 2007, but got stuck in right away. His game attitude to a Bushtucker trial that required him to eat live cockroaches and a kangaroo penis – “I’ve had worse things in my mouth,” he quipped – helped secure him a well-earned victory in the final.

Joe Swash (2008)

Eastenders actor Joe Swash’s cheeky attitude and knack for one-liners made him perfect reality TV material, and he romped home to victory in 2008. Swash went on to follow in 2006 winner Matt Willis’ footsteps, becoming the host of ITV2 spin-off show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here NOW.

Gino D’Acampo (2009)

The TV chef’s Italian exuberance and filthy sense of humour kept the camp lively, and he proved the favourite from the start, topping the nightly vote throughout the competition. Not everyone was thrilled by his victory, however – the Australian RSPCA voiced their outrage when D’Acampo killed a rat to supplement his meagre rations.

Stacey Solomon (2010)

The X Factor contestant, who listed her special skill as “talking”, conquered the nation’s heart with her effervescent and slightly clueless personality. Her memorable moments included hitting fellow camper Dom Joly in the face with a stone in an attempt to “subtly” get his attention, and she won with a massive 80% of the vote.

Dougie Poynter (2011)

Former McFly bassist Poynter beat odds-on favourite Mark Wright to become King of the Jungle in 2011. While viewers are used to contestants’ complaints about hunger, loneliness, insects and boredom, nature-loving Poynter was having none of it, declaring: “These have been the best couple of weeks of my life.”

Charlie Brooks (2012)

Eastenders actress Charlie Brooks proved to be a far cry from her villainous onscreen persona Janine, and she was crowned Queen of the Jungle in series 12. Brooks attracted viewers’ sympathy after she picked the wrong door in a Bushtucker Trial, forfeiting a chance to see her seven-year-old daughter Kiki – a stunt for which ITV received a ticking-off from Ofcom.

Kian Egan (2013)

Ex-Westlife singer Egan triumphed repeatedly in the Bushtucker trials, winning valuable meals for the contestants and thus making him as popular with his campmates as with the voters at home. His sparkly eyed Irish charm didn’t hurt, either, and he beat bookies’ favourite Joey Essex to take the title in 2013.

Carl ‘Foggy’ Fogarty (2014)

The down-to-earth superbike champion became a household name with his appearance on the latest series of the show. Unlike most of the contestants, however, Fogarty showed no desire to capitalise on his boost in fame. He explained that he did the show for the “challenge”, adding that the world of showbiz was not for him.

Vicky Pattison (2015)

The Geordie Shore star triumphed over her fellow finalists - Union J heart-throb George Shelley and Towie celeb Fearne McCann. She attributed her victory to shedding three stone before heading into camp, which she says gave her an edge in the gruelling Bushtucker Trials.

Scarlett Moffatt (2016)

Moffatt rose to fame when her family joined the cast of Channel 4’s Gogglebox in 2014, quickly becoming the show’s breakout star - and she proved just as popular with audiences in the jungle. Being crowned Queen of the Jungle was a dream for the TV-mad reality star, who has been watching I’m A Celebrity since the age of ten.

Georgia “Toff” Toffolo (2017)

The Made in Chelsea star won over the nation with her witty asides and cheery personality. But the reality TV star revealed she almost turned down her chance for a stint in the jungle over concerns about her acne. Toff said she feared people would realise the extent of her skin issues but overcame that fear to take her place in the jungle hall of fame.

Harry Redknapp (2018)

The former England football team boss was crowned King of the Jungle, after saying he’d never seen the show before heading in last year. He starred alongside Noel Edmonds in his first Bushtucker trial, which saw him enjoying mouthfuls of sheep’s brain and fish eyes.
