Four of the finest winter terraces in London
For those days when your local pub just won't cut it, these seasonal pop-ups transform humble outdoor spaces into havens of hygge
Igloos at the Coppa Club
The only thing more magical than sipping festive cocktails while gazing out over the glittering vista of the Thames and Tower Bridge is doing so from inside your own private igloo. The Coppa Club has set up eight giant transparent PVC domes especially for the season, complete with a table and chairs, heating, in-built speakers and sheepskin blankets – perfect for a more intimate affair.
Until March 2017; 3 Three Quays Walk, Lower Thames Street, EC3R 6AH; coppaclub.co.uk

Lodge d'Argent at the Coq d'Argent
High above the City streets, on the Coq d'Argent's skyscraper terrace, the Lodge d'Argent is a fairy tale come true. The space is inspired by Little Red Riding Hood's walk through the woods to Grandma's house – think rustic log-cabin walls, furs and wintry ferns. The menu focuses on hearty French classics such as raclette gratin with ratte potatoes and Alpine dry-cured ham, while a list of warming winter cocktails has been created in collaboration with Hennessy cognac.
Until February 2017; 1 Poultry, London EC2R 8EJ; coqdargent.co.uk
Skye Halla at Queen of Hoxton
Describing itself as "a Nordic Viking feasting-and-drinking hall in the clouds", Skye Halla is just that. A rooftop wigwam atop Shoreditch's Queen of Hoxton, it's decked out with fairy lights, fire pits, drinking horns and a long boat. There will be themed food and drink (Thor's Courage cocktail, anyone?) and a series of interactive events and workshops will be held here throughout the season.
Until March 2017; 1 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3JX; queenofhoxton.com
Bankside's Wonky Wonderland
Now for something even more off-piste: the Hilton London Bankside's Wonky Wonderland installation, a pop-up for Christmas trees that would otherwise be unloved and unwanted. The unconventional trees – dressed to impress in solar-powered fairy lights, moss and silver birch – will surround the hotel's cosy winter terrace, where guests can indulge in fare from the hotel's Distillery bar. In the New Year, their bark will be reused on local gardening projects.
Until 6 January. Hilton London Bankside, 2–8 Great Suffolk Street, London SE1 0UG; betterbankside.co.uk
