London City Island: Secluded riverside living
With the promise of art, culture and luxury riverside living, join London's newest neighbourhood on the Leamouth Peninsula
The word "island" generally conjures up images of pristine beaches, crystal clear seas and plenty of sun. But back in daily reality, for those who need to be within a stone's throw of the centre of the capital, the riverfront living at London City Island might be the next best thing.
The new development on the Leamouth Peninsula offers a degree of seclusion from the daily hustle and bustle with 12 acres of land surrounded by water, and connected to the rest of London by bridge. It neighbours the financial hub of Canary Wharf and is just a 25-minute Tube journey from Bond Street. These journey times are set to be slashed when Crossrail comes to the area in 2018, along with a new bridge spanning the River Lea providing easier access to Canning Town station.
Inspired by such waterside cityscapes as Chicago and Manhattan, the development comprises seven towers. Each is decked out in a different colour that takes its cues from the local area's maritime history as well as the nearby Trinity Buoy Wharf lighthouse, which was used by scientist Michael Faraday to conduct his pioneering electrical experiments.

The 1,700 new homes vary from one-bed apartments to expansive penthouses, offering enviable views across the east of the city. Particular attention has been paid to the on-site amenities, which encompass the City Island Arts Club, a bolthole for residents where they can enjoy the library and games room in luxury clubhouse surrounds, and a dedicated gym, equipped with hydro-pool saunas and steam rooms.
One of the most exciting draws is the future arrival of the English National Ballet headquarters and school, which will certainly boost Leamouth Peninsula's creative credentials. The London Film School will also follow suit. A new public square, incorporating design inspired by the tea-chest cargo boxes of the East India Dock Company, will feature raised plinths for showcasing artists' work, while the central space will host events and public performances.
