Frayed, printed or pastel, this is how denim's shaping up for summer 2017

Those trusty blues are turning pink and white and becoming frayed, laced or coloured

We all have that one pair of jeans that has seen us through every holiday and every break-up, make-up and pub night. Well, it's time to retire those old faithfuls, or just give them a little rest, and try these new summer trends. From cropped to flared and everything in between, denim is taking over.

Fraying

Uneven, frayed and cut-off hems are dominating both the catwalks and city streets.

Harper's Bazaar listed this trend as its #2 in the denim world and said frayed hems "make for an ideal way to show off your shoes".

Anything but traditional blues

"Millennial pink" has officially become a movement – just ask NY Mag. And this trend that refuses to go away has taken over from traditional trusty blue jeans. Afraid of pink? Try a crisp pair of white jeans or this season's experiment with the laced-up look. Even dare to make a statement with a decorated, embellished pair of jeans.

Skirt the issue

The mini skirt is back and more denim than ever. This 2005 look is being worn by celebs like Rihanna styled with a long button-down. But if so much leg on show isn't your style, try the midi look. "If you were one of 99.9 per cent of London's female population who lived in a A-line button-down denim skirt last summer, meet your new spring fling, the denim midi skirt," says the Evening Standard.

Dungaree dresses

Whether you're young or old, a pinafore is a denim staple that's not only stylish but super easy to wear. Dress it up or dress it down by throwing it over a bell-sleeve shirt, plain white tee or sweatshirt. This versatile piece is perfect to wear to the office then to post-work pub drinks.

Britney's double denim

Some call it the "Canadian tuxedo", others call it overload, but we call it iconic. That's right, the denim-on-denim trend echoing Britney Spears' famous fashion moment with then beau Justin Timberlake is "Oops, I did it again" worthy. Vogue noted Yeezy Season 5 is "having a denim moment" and Kanye's not the only one. Pick-up an oversized denim jacket and pair with high-waisted jeans, says Harper's Bazaar and you'll match "pretty much every model off-duty this season".
