Predictions: who will win at Pebble Beach?
Golf legend Jack Nicklaus, talking to Sky Sports: Tiger Woods
“I would think Tiger [Woods]. Tiger won there by a million there the last time he won, he grew around that area and he is smart, so knows how to play there. I think Tiger will play well but a lot of the guys are playing well too, so it’ll be a good tournament.”
Golfweek USA Today: Dustin Johnson
“This time, the other Bash Brother wins the major. Dustin Johnson, after finishing runner-up to his frequent workout partner Brooks Koepka in the PGA Championship, will return to No.1 in the world with his second US Open title. His history at Pebble Beach - two wins, two seconds, one third, one fourth, one fifth and one seventh in 12 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am starts - stands out. He also was the 54-hole leader by three at Pebble Beach in the 2010 US Open before a triple and double on the second and third holes doomed him to an 82 and a tie for eighth. Has the firepower, superb short-iron game and perfect temperament to win the national championship.”
Alex Myers, Golfworld: Dustin Johnson
“Sorry, Brooks, but we’re giving the slight edge to DJ here because of his stellar track record at Pebble Beach. In the annual tour stop, Johnson has two wins and two runner-ups. He was also the 54-hole leader at the 2010 U.S. Open there. Just as importantly, in his 16 rounds at the four biggest stroke-play events of 2019, Johnson’s worst score is a pair of 70s at the Masters.”
Matt Barrie, ESPN: Rory McIlroy
“It’s probably dumb not picking Mr. Majors, Brooks Koepka. However, equally as stupid would be ignoring McIlroy’s complete domination in Canada this past week. We’ve been waiting since The Players to see him put together four days of dominant golf. He did so at the RBC, shooting his lowest tournament score ever on the PGA Tour. That swagger and swing heads to Pebble Beach, where he will win his second US Open.”
Chris Fallica, ESPN Stats & Information: Rickie Fowler
“After three runners-up and eight top-5 finishes in majors, the list of near-misses continues to grow. But Fowler is too good of a player to not break through at some point. His putting is among the best on the Tour. With most seemingly focused on Koepka, Rory, DJ and Tiger, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this is the week Fowler loses the best player not to win a major label.”
Luke Norris, Fansided: Brooks Koepka
“How am I supposed to pick against this guy right now? He prides himself on being ready for major championships and just keeps winning them. Sure, it’s a bit of a copout pick as he’s the No.1 player in the world and the two-time defending champion, but until someone steps up and beats him at the US Open, he has to be the pick. Koepka wins the 2019 US Open at 6-under. Book it.”
