1. The Hundred comes under fire for snack sponsors

The BBC reports that The Hundred, English cricket’s new 100-ball tournament, has been criticised by health campaigners for its KP Snacks sponsorship deal.

Taking place from 17 July to 16 August 2020, The Hundred men’s and women’s competitions will feature eight teams across seven cities which will each have shirts sponsored by the snack food company’s brands.

Obesity Health Alliance spokesperson Caroline Cerny said: “Junk food brands sponsorship of popular sporting events is just another way they make sure their unhealthy products take centre stage in children’s minds.”

Italy were reduced to 14 men when loose-head prop Andrea Lovotti saw red for dropping South Africa No.8 Duane Vermeulen on his head. Stuff.nz described it as a “horror spear tackle”.

6. Pochettino urges Spurs to stay together

Sky Sports reports that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino insists he won’t walk away from the Premier League club. Spurs were thrashed 7-2 in the Champions League by Bayern Munich in midweek, but Pochettino is committed to the north London team.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s match at Brighton tomorrow, the Argentine said: “It is a moment to stay all together. I accept the opinions. When you don’t win, not only at Tottenham, this happens at every club in the world.

“It is normal that the game has created a lot of opinion and rumours, everyone needs to talk. But in the end, the only thing that happened is that we lost a game. I have no doubt we are going to stay together and find a way to be successful again, no doubt.”

Arsenal are top of Europa League group F after a 4-0 win over Standard Liege last night. Brazilian 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli starred in the victory at the Emirates by scoring twice and setting up Dani Ceballos for his first goal in Arsenal colours. Joe Willock, 20, was also on the scoresheet.

In group K Wolves were 1-0 winners away at Besiktas and in group L Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by AZ Alkmaar. Celtic beat CFR Cluj 2-0 in group E and Rangers lost 2-1 at Young Boys in group G.

8. Max ‘doesn’t agree’ with F1’s 22-race schedule

Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen is not a fan of Formula 1’s decision to expand the 2020 calendar to a record 22 races.

He told Autosport: “I don’t agree with 22 races a year. I think we should just pick the best tracks out there - I know they want to make money, but they also have to think about the mechanics who rock up to the track.

“For most of the people it’s at least five or six days [at the track], and then I’m not even complaining about us, it’s the mechanics, they can file for a divorce straight away if there’s going to be more.”

9. West Ham set price for Rice

If Manchester United want to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice they will have to stump up £80m. Apparently United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been “keeping tabs” on the 20-year-old Rice, who was yesterday named in the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

10. KJT wins gold and breaks British record

Katarina Johnson-Thompson followed in Dina Asher-Smith’s footsteps by winning gold at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

The 26-year-old won the heptathlon last night with 6,981 points - beating the British record previously held by Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Johnson-Thompson said: “This is the result of so many attempts of trying to perform on this stage.”
