The clip was shown to journalists and special badge-holders at a press event as part of SXSW, an annual media festival which takes place in Austin, Texas.
Although other attendees were strictly prohibited from filming the new clip, some of those lucky enough to see it described the footage for the benefit of their fellow fans.
Business Insider reports that the scene shows Melisandre and Davos apparently discussing Jon Snow. "I saw him in the flames, fighting at Winterfell," the Red Priestess says, as an image of the fans' favourite flashes across the screen.
Her vision appears to confirm the prevailing fan theory that, contrary to appearances at the end of series five - Jon Snow is not really dead.
Reports also say the video was projected above 3D holographic flames, letting the viewers see the vision with Melisandre's clairvoyant abilities.
The clip will now be available for all attendees at SXSW as part of the Game of Thrones exhibition, which also features new artwork, costumes and even the Iron Throne itself. Not only that, there is a Wall of Faces where attendees can take a selfie to add to the display.
Game of Thrones season six trailer's most brutal moments
11 March
Game of Thrones season six's first trailer has finally arrived and there is plenty of violence, as well as some brutal revelations for fans…
[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"content_original","fid":"92056","attributes":{"class":"media-image"}}]]
Fate of Jon Snow
The trailer opens with a shot of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), lying on the ground at Castle Black, apparently dead. The voice of Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) confirms our worst fears: "He's gone." However, there are plenty of reasons to suspect HBO might be misdirecting fans about Snow's death, from on-set leaks to suspicious hair styles.
Lannisters fight back
Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has returned to King's Landing and can be heard telling his sister, Cersei (Lena Headey): "Everything they've taken from us, we're going to take back and more." It is not clear if he is talking about the murder of their daughter, Myrcella, or the humiliation inflicted on Cersei, but a battle with the Sparrows looks imminent. In another scene, Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon) tells Cersei to order her "man" to step aside or there'll be violence. "I choose violence," she replies.
Boltons in battle
Ramsey Battle and his men appear to be involved in a big battle, with a flayed man burning in front of a huge line of soldiers. Rumour has it the clash will involve the wildlings as well as Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) and Jon Snow, should he be resurrected.
Tower of Joy flashbacks
The trailer appears to confirm a long-running rumour that Ned Stark (Sean Bean) will feature in a flashback of the Baratheon rebellion at the Tower of Joy – the real-life Castle of Zafra, in Guadalajara Spain. A man who looks very much like the Sheffield actor can be seen drawing his sword on a hilltop.
Arya takes a beating
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) is still blind and can be seen taking a rough hit to the face, while another scene has her flying out of a window in Braavos, apparently as part of a chase sequence. Williams has already warned that her character "gets broken down totally" in season six. "We see her at the lowest point we've ever seen her," she said.
Bran meets Night King
Meanwhile, Arya's paralysed brother, Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), goes face-to-face with the White Walker's Night King. However, Bran is standing up, suggesting this is a scene from one of his visions. He is currently training with the Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow), allowing him to witness the past, present and future. Some fans speculate he is watching the moment when the Night King confronted Jon Snow in season five.
The fall of Daenerys
The great Khaleesi, apparently a prisoner, is seen marching side by side with thousands of Dothraki on what looks like the outskirts of Vaes Dothrak. But there is still hope for Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke): the trailer offers a momentary glimpse of one of her giant dragons in the sky, as well as her old admirer Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen), who is on her trail. Can she persuade the Dothraki to accompany her to Westeros and retake the throne?
Game of Thrones: behind-the-scenes video reveals season six clues
02 March
As anticipation for Game of Thrones season six grows, HBO has whetted fans' appetites with a peek into life behind the camera on the hit show.
A new five-minute clip entitled The Best Seat in the House features interviews with the show's camera operators. And eagle-eyed viewers have spotted some series six clues ahead of its April premiere…[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"content_original","fid":"91755","attributes":{"class":"media-image"}}]]
Ned Stark is back
As a child, that is. Last year, fans noticed a casting call looking for boys with brown hair and Northern accents and quickly guessed that the actors in question would be playing younger versions of the Stark brothers, Ned, Brandon and Benjen. The brief glimpse we see of two boys sparring with wooden swords in the courtyard of Winterfell, the family's ancestral home, appears to confirm this.
A new army for Dany?
It looked as if it could be curtains for the Mother of Dragons when viewers last saw queen-on-the-run Daenerys. In her final scene of series five, she was surrounded by a horde of Dothraki bloodriders – who aren't exactly known for their nurturing instincts. However, a scene from the new video shows a crowd of unarmed riders flocking towards someone – could it be their former queen? She was married to a Dothraki, she speaks the lingo and she's charmed them before…
Someone will burn
Possibly the most sharp-sighted spot of all comes from Vanity Fair, which identified the top of a burning cross poking up from a valley during a battle scene. As fans know, tying a flayed enemy upside down to a flaming cross during battle is a House Bolton trademark. Add in previous rumours that two characters will meet death by fire and it seems some familiar faces might find themselves too close to the cross for comfort.
Of course, what fans really want to see is a full trailer for the upcoming series. So far, HBO has played its cards close to its chest but with the first episode merely weeks away, it can't be long now.
Game of Thrones: TV show will miss book's big twist, says Martin
26 February
A big twist in the next Game of Thrones book is unlikely to feature in the television show because the character involved has been killed off.
Author George RR Martin is currently writing The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, but it will not be out before the show begins on 24 April.
The television version has therefore overtaken the books in terms of plot and storylines are set to diverge at a faster pace this season.
Speaking to IGN, Martin said that producers will face quite a challenge with one of his big twists because it features a character who is alive in the books, but dead in the show.
There are several important characters who meet these criteria, including Stannis Baratheon, his daughter Shireen, Princess Myrcella and Mance Rayder.
"It is fairly obvious because it is something that involves a couple of characters, one of which is dead on the show and not dead in the books," said Martin. "So the show can't do it, unfortunately, because they have killed someone I have not killed."
Asked if he ever felt he had to "beat the show", the writer said: "If I did have that thought, I've lost, because the show has caught up and is in the process of passing me.
"Ideally, I would have liked to have finished all seven books and have the story complete, but the show moves at a faster pace than I do and that's partly because I am a slow writer."
Game of Thrones: Natalie Dormer defends violent scenes
23 February
Game of Thrones should not be seen as escapism, British actress Natalie Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell in the hit show, has told fans.
Scenes in which characters are raped, tortured, incinerated and murdered have shocked viewers and come in for criticism, most recently by the creator of History Channel's new series Vikings.
"I feel like a lot of other people, that sex in Game Of Thrones and other shows is completely gratuitous and unnecessary and a lot of the violence is gratuitous... It's largely to shock," showrunner Michael Hirst told Cinema Blend this week.
However, Dormer claims Game of Thrones helps her make sense of the world.
Asked by The Sunday Times if she thought the show had "gone too far" with its brutality, she says: "I choose fantasy to vent, to process complex political, sexual and social politics at the safe distance of fiction. For me, that's what art should be.
"All I know is that I turn on the news and it's covering a boy drowning off the coast or children being shown beheading videos. The horror of human nature is prevalent in our world, and I appreciate that some people want to turn on the telly for escapism – but if that's what you want, don't watch Game of Thrones."
Nevertheless, she did admit some of the scenes were hard. "I find parts of the show difficult to watch, but I don't think we do young people any favours by sheltering them," she said.
In other Westeros news, the internet has been set ablaze by a fan video placing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in some classic Game of Thrones scenes.
In the expertly-crafted video, the billionaire businessman is seen rudely turning away Daenerys Targaryen and her vaguely Muslim-looking cohorts from the gates of Meereen, confusing the hell out of Tyrion Lannister and "most significantly", says the Daily Beast, arguing against letting the Wildlings who live north of the Wall into Westeros.
"We have no border, we have no control, people are flooding across," Trump says to the men of the Night's Watch. "We need to build a wall. And it has to be built quickly."[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"content_original","fid":"91316","attributes":{"class":"media-image"}}]]
Game of Thrones season six: does teaser signal death of best-loved characters?
18 February
The latest teaser for Game of Thrones season six has left fans fearing that more of their favourite characters are about to be killed off.
Set in the Hall of Faces, the 80-second clip lingers on dead characters from previous seasons, including Ned, Rob and Catelyn Stark and King Joffrey. Finally, the camera rests on Jon Snow, whose voice can be heard saying: "The Long Night is coming, and the dead come with it."
Just as viewers are led to believe Snow must be dead after all, the disembodied faces of other living characters such as Tyrion Lannister come into view in the crypt.[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"content_original","fid":"90835","attributes":{"class":"media-image"}}]]
As the show will overtake the books, we're heading into "uncharted territory", says The Verge: "That means that any one of Game of Thrones' hundreds of characters could be breathing their last this season, and today's trailer rams that point home, hovering ominously around the Stark siblings, as well as other major characters."
Is Tyrion dead? asks Bustle. "According to this trailer, it's a very real possibility."
The inclusion of so many key characters, such as Daenerys Targaryen and Arya and Sansa Stark, in the bodiless line-up offers some hope that the producers will not kill everyone off - at least, not all at once.
Some fans have pointed out that some apparently dead characters, such as Stannis Baratheon and The Hound, did not appear in the Hall of Faces with the Starks and King Joffrey. Others argue they were simply out of sight.
"Everyone you love is at risk again this year," says Joanna Robinson at Vanity Fair, although she adds that, unless the scene is an upcoming Arya vision, the teaser does not seem to contain any actual footage from season six, in keeping with HBO's increased level of secrecy.
"Everyone's head is on the chopping block this season," she continues. "In previous years book readers, at least, were prepared for the death of the Starks, Oberyn Martell, Khal Drogo, etc. But this year? Well, it's anyone's guess and in that final shot HBO wants to make it clear that even your surviving favourites probably won't make it through the entire season in one piece."
Should we be bracing ourselves for more death? "Hint: YES," says Hollywood Life. "We're freaking out. Does this mean everyone is going to die? Surely not. But it's clear no one is safe."
The Radio Times questions whether Snow's face might be given life - "of a sort" - by the faceless men, which "could even lead to the particularly weird situation of faceless girl-in-training Arya wearing the face of her dead dad or brother".
Meanwhile, a new photograph of Daenerys Targaryen shows her tied up and surrounded by Dothrakis.
