Giroud, Cazorla, Drinkwater and Howard in team of the week

The Premier League season is not quite over thanks to the forgetful security contractors at Old Trafford, but after what was supposed to be the final curtain there is little left to be decided.

Arsenal pinched second place from Spurs at the death, although the Lilywhites will take more from the season overall than the Gunners, while Man City drew with Swansea to guarantee Champions League football next season (unless Manchester United can beat Bournemouth 18-0 on Tuesday night).

Liverpool could only draw with West Brom meaning they must beat Sevilla in the Europa League final if they want to play in Europe next season, while Newcastle bade farewell to the top flight with a bizarre 5-1 win over Spurs.

But who were the stars of the final weekend of the season? Here's The Week's pick of the experts' picks:

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard (Everton)

A sentimental, but popular, choice in goal. "The American was playing his last game for Everton, returning to the team having lost his place for the last few months of the season, and it could hardly have gone better for Howard," says ESPN. He kept a clean sheet as Everton beat Norwich 3-0.

Defence: Hector Bellerin (Arsenal), Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle United), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Leighton Baines (Everton)

A back four of full backs for the final week of the season. Arsenal youngster "covered a lot of ground down the flanks and set up Giroud's hat-trick goal", says the Press Association. Janmaat of Newcastle was "one of [the Magpies'] better performers" as they put Spurs to the sword, says ESPN.

Southampton's Ryan Bertrand caught the eye of Harry Redknapp in the Daily Telegraph as he scored a penalty in Southampton's 4-1 demolition of Palace, while Baines of Everton also scored a penalty as he notched an impressive 15 points on Fantasy Premier League.

Midfield: Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City), Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko (Newcastle United), Sadio Mane (Southampton)

Fit again Arsenal midfielder Cazorla impressed on his return to the side for the final game of the season and completed 81 passes, notes PA. England hopeful Drinkwater "has a more than decent chance of making the cut for Euro 2016, and a cracking goal to snatch a point against Chelsea might just prove to be decisive for Roy Hodgson", says Goal.com.

Newcastle playmaker Sissoko was involved in three goals against Tottenham and was "too hot to handle for woeful Spurs, as he tormented the London club", says Goal.com. Wijnaldum has not been very reliable for Newcastle this season but "when he does play well he has been one of the better attacking midfielders in the country", says ESPN, and he proved it on Sunday.

Saints forward Mane managed a goal and an assist against Palace, who "had no answer to the livewire", says Goal.com.

Attack: Olivier Giroud (Arsenal)

A hat-trick makes the French striker the top scorer this week on Fantasy Premier League. "While there aren't many who think he's the world-class centre-forward that Arsenal need, that treble does mean that he ends the season with an impressive 16 goals in the Premier League," says ESPN.
