High school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz, 19, made his first appearance in court Thursday, where he was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Cruz was identified Wednesday as the gunman who opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in south Florida with an AR-15 rifle, killing 17. At Cruz's court appearance, the defense did not make an argument, and the state sought to hold Cruz with no bond. The Associated Press reports that after his court appearance, he confessed to investigators that he was behind the killings. Cruz had a history of making disturbing social media posts and threats, and was recently orphaned after his mother died in the fall of complications with the flu.
