The best Sunday roasts in London
Opinionated About Dining founder Steve Plotnicki on where to get the best Sunday roasts in the capital
Blacklock Soho
I often stay at the Ham Yard Hotel which is around the corner from Piccadilly Circus and I love to fall out of bed after a Sunday sleep-in and order the Blacklock’s All In platter (£20) which features cuts of beef, lamb and pork with all of the trimmings. It’s a perfect way for a large group of people to waste away a Sunday afternoon. Shame they don’t serve dinner as often I am looking for a place to enjoy a roast in the early evening after spending a day doing some shopping or visiting London’s museums.

One could argue that on a daily basis, Brett Graham and Mike Robinson’s pub in Fulham is the best in Britain, so why shouldn’t they serve one of the county’s best roasts. Starters are a bit cheffier than what you will find at your typical gastropub and might include dishes like home cured pork belly with baked celeriac, smoked sour cream and hazelnut followed by a cutting board filled with hunks of 55-day dry-aged Hereford beef that is surrounded by piles of potatoes, onions and Yorkshire puddings.
Jugged Hare
If you are looking for a high energy Sunday Roast, the Jugged Hare, located across from the Barbican, is the perfect place. The restaurant features an open kitchen, and if you are lucky enough to get seated near the pass, you will be treated to a non-stop show of wait staff carrying some of the tastiest looking plates of food in London. As the name suggests, game is done particularly well here. Coming from the US, eating hamburgers in London is not something I normally do. But after watching the kitchen here turn out more than a dozen of them while we were busy eating our beef and lamb, we couldn’t resist any longer and we ordered one to share for the table.
Mall Tavern
If it’s a lazy Sunday atmosphere that you are looking for, this pub, tucked away on a quiet side street in Notting Hill, is a perfect choice. Filled with dressed down locals and families who live in the neighbourhood enjoying a cozy Sunday. While I have been known to order the rib of beef, I often stray from the standard protocol and often choose their terrific Roast Goosnargh Chicken for two which they serve with all of the fixings.
Marquess Tavern
As an Arsenal supporter, this is the perfect place to enjoy a large hunk of beef while throwing back a few pints before the mile stroll to watch a late Sunday afternoon match at the Emirates. Their unique way of offering beef – they present a chalkboard with a list of cuts listed by weight that are available on the day – means you can order as much beef as you need, making it a good place to go regardless of the number of people you are with.
Opinionated About Dining (OAD) will announce the Top 100+ European Restaurants list in London on 23 April, with some of Europe’s most celebrated chefs convening in the Great Hall of Sir Christopher Wren’s iconic Royal Hospital Chelsea for a collaborative multi-course banquet. Christened by OAD founder Steve Plotnicki as ‘The Great Roast’, the dinner will present a unique, gourmet take on a classic British roast.
