The White House announced Monday that President Trump had canceled a visit by the Philadelphia Eagles set for Tuesday, which was supposed to commemorate their Super Bowl win earlier this year. In a statement, Trump said some members of the team "disagree with their president because he insists that they proudly stand for the national anthem, hand on heart." On Tuesday, the White House issued a subsequent statement, claiming the team had initially pledged to send 81 representatives before reversing to offer "only a tiny handful," saying the "vast majority of the Eagles team decided to abandon their fans." No members of the Eagles kneeled for the anthem during the 2017-18 season.
